compaq armada 7400

straight to the point...

i had installed debian 3.1 linux on my compaq armada 7400 and everything seemed to be working fine except that the screen was flickering to the point that i got annoyed and installed Fedora 4 instead. A new problem, the network stopped working. I checked quite a few threads and followed and still no network. I read that it may be the kernel [before 2.4, now 2.6] that may have caused the problem. Is it possible to downgrade?

network card: 3Com 3cxem556

thank you
