NIC problems

OK so my internet was working fine, until i bought a new NIC and put in it my box, ever since then my internet wont connect - i can see in the boot text that eth0 is still trying to see my old Realtek card, but now i have a Linksys
at some point during boot i can see a line of text that says "eth0 link down" im not quit sure what that means but i can take a hint
when i get into KDE i did a ifconfig and all it lists is eth1 and eth2 as well as lo
eth1/2 are my onbaord nics, id use those to connect but id have to call my isp and give them my mac address - and im to lazy to do that
netconf wont fix anything and i tried the driver off the linksys cd but that wasnt anyhelp, especially since tulip is already in my modules file
i even uncommented the /sbin/modules tulip and i can see it load at bootup but i still dont have any luck

any guidance would be greatly appreciated

so youve got adsl right? and youve got one of those modems that plug into your network card
how many network cards have you got in your pc at the moment?
please give us the output of lspci and lsmod
if you have problems with hardware, its usually a good idea to put these in your post

Have you run lsmod to see which modules are loaded? You can use modprobe to load a module for your new card if it is not listed by lsmod. Do you know which chipset your new card uses? You may need to know this so that you know which information to pass to modprobe. You can then move on to ifconfig to bring up the connection. If you have success doing this manually you will need edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules to automate the process at boot.

All the best.

joker20 are you using a costum compiled kernel or default one? I would try searching for the correct drivers for each net card and make sure that they're present as modules or buit-in the kernel.

The following URL may be helpful. It's certainly quite a read:
http://vayne.fdns.net/presario.html

Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with Slackware to offer anything other than a shameless method of trying to debug problems like this. The shameless method is to boot using Knoppix then peek around the runtime stuff to see how it has configured your NICs.

Sounds like your built-in NICs may not be in use. I'd disable them in the BIOS, if this is the case. Doing so may or may not make it easier to address your original reason for the post.

i'm also new to linux. if i where you i would disable first the 2 ethernet card. issue lspci to see what card is really detected and then check lsmod to see if the module is really loaded. once the module is loaded, you should see 2 ethernet device when you issue ifconfig.

are you using dhcp or you were assigned a static ip?

dchp

if you look in my recent posts, all 3 nics are detected and in the first half of that post it shows my drivers being loaded
but im still at loss as to why i cant connect

my intention is to lessen the confusion on which nic to configure. try issuing dhcpcd eth0. wherein eth0 is the name of the nic you want to use.

i disabled both my onboard nics, not luck
ifconfig wont list eth0 and lspci still detects my card
my Linksys driver is named Tulip...so thats what i enabled in my modules but i took a closer look at it in the rc.modules and it doestn say anythign about linksys
i also have had alot of troubel compiling my linksys driver from the cd so i just gave up on it

i should also mention ive gotten a new mobo, cpu, and ram a while back and never recompiled my kernel (dont know if that really matters) but i cant remember if my NIC worked on my slack drive before or after i got my new hardware or if it was my old nic that was working

not seeing eth0 doesnt mean the module is not loaded, my wifi card before used different name. In your case, the driver is successfully loaded. try issuing "dhcpcd ADM", where ADM is the name of your nic . ADM is probabbly the name of your nic.

i dont think ADM is the name of my nic, its a linksys card and i work at best buy in the geek squad and the same nic we use to put in systems w/o nics is the same one i have at home
i looked at the card and it saysing nothing ADM anywhere

im really confused at this situation
