Ok, both NICs are RealTeks...one with the chipset of RTL-8139, and the other with RTL-8029...
I installed Slackware with both of them in there, removing some packages etc to free up space, then recompiled the kernel for my first time when it booted up (this is a test box
)
Ok, i wrote the top half of this then went away and tried some stuff...
turns out the RTL-8139 won't work at all...even by itself...i try going: modprobe 8139too and it seems to load fine, then if i go ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.210 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0 and linux locks up!! OMFG! ive actually gotten linux to lock up!
any possible idea's?
EDIT: also, when i go modprobe 8139too it'll try and find that piece of hardware in the machine and try and 'bind' that module to that piece of hardware, correct? so when you try and use the hardware, it goes through the module..?
EDIT AGAIN: when i have the other NIC (RealTek 8029) in, this is the lsmod output:
root@testbox:~# lsmod
Module Size Used by Not tainted
ne2k-pci 4928 1
8390 5792 0 [ne2k-pci]
seems like a strange module to be using to me...
Another EDIT:
i just added this line into /etc/rc.d/rc.modules: /sbin/modprobe 8139too and then added this into /etc/modules.conf: alias eth0 8139too...im guess that alias is how you 'bind' them together?
anways, i rebooted and then where it sets up the network interface with ifconfig it just locks up (like when i manually issued the command)...now, where did i put that bootdisk..
