Question New USB HP 6540 printer-Not seen

New HP 6540 printer not seen, apparently. Under RH 9.0 it is seen and can be configured via "localhost:631" and prints. How do I get 10.2 to see it? When set up via "*.631" @ usb1,'lpq' says "ready, printing" with the job data, but there's no printing. After 'lqrm', 'lpq' says "ready, no jobs". I'm relatively new and had no trouble with my old Epson C86 (except it went bad). My "geek" nomenclature vocabulary is minimal, so any answer will have to start from scratch. Thanks!

Sir:
Thanks for the rapid response. Unfortunately, while the printer is now recognized (under USB2, rather than USB1 as expected- my computer has 2 USN outlets, & I guess the left is not USB1 as I figured) it still does not print. The recogniion is evidenced in the localhost:631 response. I do have HP's "hplip" installed but not loaded - if it must be loaded rather than using the 'gimpprint' driver. It is listed with 'gimpprint' appended. All print,'lpq', & 'lprm/lpq' responses are the same, (however "not ready"though, if modified under USB1.) I didn't know about the '/etc/rc.d/rc.modules' file, though. Thanks for the info.

Sirs:

I've got my HP 6540 USB printer working using the 'HP Installation Instructions' found on the internet, following steps 2 & 3. In step 2 I ignored the errors following the 'make install' instruction, just to try; and lo and behold, the aforementioned device appeared in the device list on the 'localhost:631' CUPS printer installation site. From there on the installation went according to instructions - and worked. What I don't know to do is let the forum know, so I'm attempting to post this solution; I hope it hopes someone else.

Thanks for putting the solution up, it is unfortunately rare for someone to post back and say "thanks, this worked" - so thanks again. Hopefully it will be of help to someone else.
