new to slack...shutdown doesn't

well, sort of.....

if i issue the shutdown -h now all systems shut down, services and disks stop, but my computer stays 'on" powered up, but can't do anything.

i suspect its a acpi thing maybe?

i wouldn't know where to start. i know i can just push the power button and it goes off, but hey......if i want to impress my freinds a good shut down should be good too right?

anyways, where do i start?

my setup is a basic install, slackware 10.1 kernel 2.4 something(default with the install) computer is an emachine t2385 stock except for the gig of memoryi installed.

all i can off is that with other distro's i've tried, the shutdown allways killed everything and the machine did indeed shutdown.

thanks!

i'm not sure if kernel 2.4 supports acpi (or it has not been enabled by default) but all 2.6 kernels supports

Probably an issue with apm, make sure that the lines for apm are uncommented in /etc/rc.d/rc.M.

Try:
Code:
/sbin/modprobe apm
Then shutdown.
If it works, remove the # of the line that starts like /sbin/modprobe apm inside /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.

Or you could have picked the bareacpi.i kernel during installation.

I meant rc.modules in my last post and not rc.M. Anyway I'm glad you got it working.
