My clock is messed up.

I've been running arch linux, with my clock set to UTC with no problem.

Recently I installed slackware on a different partition. During the setup I chose to set my clock to 'local time' instead of UTC by accident.

Now in slackware my clock shows the wrong time. Also in arch it shows the same wrong time.

I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference.

My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch.

Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect?

I dont' know anything about how the clock or the setup works. So any help on what to do, and what I can read to better understand this would be appreciated.

Thank you

Make sure both distros are set to UTC and fix the time in the BIOS. Should fix your problem.

Thanks bonixavier. But I'm still not fixed.

I reset my time in my BIOS to the correct time. But both distros show my clock 7 hours ahead of the actual time. I don't know what to do.

I just set my time ( it was previously wrong )

as root:

Code:
date -s 2300
It's 11 PM for US Eastern.

Just choose your time. No reboot is needed.

Is it true that the time in your BIOS can be set to UTC or localtime also? I read elsewhere that it can be set to either. But in my BIOS I see nothing relating to that. Simply the time and date and nothing more are in my BIOS.

Thanks cfdisk. I didn't know about that command and it appears that it worked. I did that in slackware and my time stayed set correctly after a reboot and it changed it in arch linux also. But I dont' understand why it changed the time in Arch.

You are welcome.

And about Arch's wrong time I could only guess that it comes via a boot loader, in your particular case, Slackware's LILO because you installed Slackware after Arch.

Hi. Did you set the clock in the BIOS for your local time or to UTC? I live in a GMT -3 area so I have to add 3 hours to the hardware clock.
