the only plugin i was able to find in order to play some mp3 is the prm for xmms. may i use it under slack too? may i use some other mp3 player already enabled for playing mp3?
You should be able to play MP3s with Slackware right away, without having to do anything with plugins. XMMS and Totem could both play MP3s for me as soon as I had installed Slackware.
There is other command line mp3 player. Others can enlighten you with it.
You can choose to compile mplayer. Very powerful. I love it.
You can get the mplayerplugin for firefox/mozilla browser. Just get the source code and compile it yourself.

Be aware that totem is a gnome package. Therefore it won't be included in the next releases.

Weird, I never got this.
If you have installed all Slackware packages, you could try e. g. "mpg321" on the command line. In KDE i think there are at least "noatun" and "juk" (at least one more, just look in the Multimedia-submenu of KDE). You could use totem player or the mentioned mplayer, but I think these are a little bit heavyweight for such a simple task.
anyone know how to setup threaded sound, so that i can use more than one application at the same time with sound? (eg, gaim, gmplayer, as well as xmms)
Originally posted by reddazz I have never had that problem as well. Maybe you can try installing amarok or beep media player.
I tried amarok.. same problem. Mind you, i have ALSA compiled in the kernel, but using OSS emulation in xmms. The Alsa drivers keep skipping whenever i use my hard drive. (2.6 kernel)
As far as Iknow, if you use alsa, then you can play sound from a variety of sources at the same time. If you use oss, I don't think this works peoperly.
If you are using KDE, configure both to output to ARTS (wrong capitalization, i've no doubt).
XMMS will need an ArTs plug-in - I'm using aRts Output 0.7.1 (which I obtained from the xmms site).
gmplayer (so long as it was compiled with arTS support) will allow you to select it from the GUI, or use the command line parameter "-ao arts")
Originally posted by pirozzi at the moment, when i try to play an mp3 using xmms it kepp saying me the due to copyright issue the track cannot be player (or something like that).
Where did you get the packet from. the only time I heard this before was about XMMS for Red Hat/Fedora. Red Hat does not include MP3 support by default due to patents for the MP3 format by the Fraunhofer Institut who developed it.
I'm using slackware for 4 years now and I haven't come across such an XMMS error message in this time. You haven't by any chance downloaded a Red Hat rpm, converted it to tgz and installed that one?
