what i am trying to do is make some mppc modules, i have done this before (make menuconfig, make install, make modules, make modules_install) but what happened is it completely overwrote all my modules and i couldnt get direct rendering to work again, and the rage 128 driver that comes with the kernel is the wrong one, when i was searching around for help i saw that lots of people were having this problem and i had to reinstall X and something else so just reformatted...so im sure i can just make all the modulest again but dont do a make modules_install and copy just the one i need, but how can i make just the one i need??? the module name file is ppp_mppe.c, in /drivers/net....also just for future reference after i do make menuconfig, then save it...it says now you can do bzimage, something, make install....i always do the make install one...is the bzimage one only when you are recompiling a new kernel?? -thanks for any help
You need to follow the ALL the steps for building and installing a new kernel each time. There are many threads here on LQ in the Slack forum on that subject and there is kernel HOWTO as well.
But when you are using modules that are not kernel based like the video driver modules then they have to be rebuilt as well. Like Alsa sound drivers, etc. The modules are built for the currently running kernel ONLY. If you rebuild, upgrade or otherwise replace the kernel, then the all outside modules have to be recompiled.
ok, thats the thing tho...i am still using the 2.4.18 kernel. I did a make modules, then copied jsut the one i needed to the correct folder but now i am geting a unresolved symbol error when i do insmod. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=47364 here is what i posted in another forum..(i know that i am not supposed to do this, but wasnt really getting any help in here) hopefully someone can help. -thanks
