this is my 1st post here, i'm new to linux and would like to dig deep into it.
Later this week I'll recieve slack 9.1 CDs and was wondering will I be able to learn it.
I have good knowledge about computers, and using windows and mac pretty fine, but now I want to be a linux Guru and read that slackware is the way.
Although its hard, but I want to do it.
Sorry guys for that very long intro, but which is the best way to learn Slackware? not just the installation, but i mean how can i learn all the info needed.
Keep at it, don't give up and read lots of howto's, documentation regarding Linux. Search when you have an question and ask if you can't find the answer.
On CD #3 is the Slackware Essentials Book.........Read It!! twice, study the filesysem structure. You'll make a few mistakes when attempting to install, that's ok! all of us made mistakes, learn how to partition and format your drive. The installer is pretty simple, Read about all the init scripts in /etc and /etc/rc.d........If you need Clarification on anything just post here, and someone Will help!!
Browse the used book stores for cheap geek books. I haven't found any ONE book with everything, and some books that have the answers are too technical for me to understand. Slackware for Dummies and Unix for Dummies, although outdated and somewhat superficial, do a good job of using non-technical language to explain some important things like how to get around in a shell and understanding the filesystem.
There is also 'man' for manual. In a shell or console you can type: man 'subject' (w/out quotes) and a lot of information will come up. Just press q to get out of the man page and back to your shell. Be prepared to read everything several times over to start to understand it.
Use the Search in this site to learn, especially before posting a question that may have been asked and answered many times before. It's a great tool!
