DV looks to be right, seems to be a bug in the theme indeed. I can reproduce (on slackware64 current, but regular kde4) by switching to Plastique widget style. Other themes don't seem to have the problem.
I have a bit esoteric setup, i.e. Xfce + KWin.
I'm using KDE4, with minimal set of apps and home re-compiled.
My theme is Cleanlooks.
But, I'm pretty sure that this bug dates way, way back.
And @heyjann can reproduce this, so it's not my setup at fault.
(Unless its graphics related, e.g. Intel driver).
I tried all the available themes.
The incorrect rendering is present in all of them.
Should you come across a fix, let me know ;-)
P.S.
Using different application is also a solution for me.
But the required capability is viewing .patch files.
Kompare shows them nicely, preserving the tree nature of the files to be patched.
I'm also using Meld and Diffuse regularly, but they seem to luck this feature.
Looking into it more, it is indeed not that theme-dependent although Oxygen seems less sensitive to it, which is the theme I tested with at first.
It appears that if at any point, the word "Source" or the filename (whatever the UI element on the left is) cannot be fully displayed, scrollbars get drawn on top of it, or it gets garbled. And resizing the window again does not help anymore after that.
When using the Oxygen widget theme, reloading that theme in systemsettings clears it up, though.
(Something that reduces the chance of it happening in the first place is - also in System Settings -> Application Appearance - reducing the size of the "General" font. But that has an obvious disadvantage.)
I have searched for this issue and possible solutions, but as Darth Vader hinted, kde4 bugs don't seem to get all that much attention nowadays. I will let you know if I find out anything.
