Kernel panic: VFS: Cannot mount root fs on 802 or 8:02

I installed slackware 9.1

During the install, I chose the reiser fs type. I installed lilo to the MBR. I have to include adaptec.s when booting from the CD, which works. I chose the vmlinuz kernel (the default one).

From the cd I type 'adaptec.s root=/dev/sda2 noinitrd ro' to boot. But I can't boot without the CD.

I searched on google and found that I might need to make an 'initial ram disk' with reiser support and the scsi support (adaptec.s) or something like that, with the command mkinitrd. There is no command on my slack 9.1 called mkinitrd, no man pages on it. However, the command is even referenced from the man pages on lilo.conf. I found I might be able to do something similar with mknod, but it's hard to understand those man pages for that.

So I can boot from the CD, but not from the hard drive. And from what I understand, it's be cause the kernel doesn't support reiser or can't find the adaptec.s module when booting.

Any ideas?

You mean the slackware install cd with the adaptec.s kernel image?

I think it's said somewhere when you install slackware that you can use the kernel image from the CD instead of the default one if that is what works for you.

To boot without the CD you could perhaps try copy adaptec.s to /boot and then fix lilo.conf accordingly (so it loads adaptec.s instead of vmlinuz on boot).

You could also compile your own kernel with the options you want (i.e with reiserfs not as a module but directly into the kernel etc). Then you could also get the latest and greatest kernel.

Which kernel did you use to boot from the CD, bare.i or adaptec.s? It sounds like you used the adaptec.s kernel from the CD, but installed the default bare.i kernel and are using the adaptec.s command to boot the kernel........

So, to use the adaptec.s kernel, go to the kernel/adaptec.s/ directory on the CD and copy the "bzImage" and "System.map.gz" to your /boot directory...........'gunzip' the System.map.gz file in the boot directory and adjust the config file for your bootloader to point to the new kernel image........for LILO, it should look somehting like this:
Code:
image = /boot/bzImage
  root = /dev/sda2
  <other image parameters>
then run the command 'lilo' (or '/sbin/lilo').....
