Question kernel/modules driver problem

I have been using Slack for a long time and I have never had some of these problems.
First of all I installed from a Slack 9.0 iso. I found that the iso's no longer have the kernel source on them so I got the 2.4.20 kernel from kernel.org. I put a sim link to it for /usr/src/linux
I have a 3com 3c990-97-tx ethernet card I needed to compile drivers for. I did but got some strange warning. It works but when I boot up it gives me that warning.
Next I needed to compile Nvidia drivers so I can get X working. I got all kinds of mod errors. I finally got it to make correctly. It loads the Nvidia modules on boot up. I then startx. X starts and there is the resolution flicker like it is changing resolution. But then all I get is a black screen. I can't kill the X server with <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> but the server seems to dies after 30 sec or so. Anyone else had this problem. There are no Errors in /var/log/XFree86.log.

Any thoughts.

Thanks
Zarnce

please! i have the same problem as you have. I'm running mandrake 8.2 and i couldnt get my GF4 to work. I've downloaded the drivers from nvidia's site, but ive got nothing but a black screen. Look over the X log and nothing seems to be wrong....mmmmm...i'll try with the binary sources rather than the .run file. i'l let you know if things got better

good luck

I take it you all have tried the new kernel driver installation program that NVIDIA has these days? If not, I'd suggest trying that.

I had some problems in the past getting the nvidia drivers to work with a custon kernel. I have a kernel compiled from source, but I didn't change a whole heck of a lot. Just the processor type.

Good luck.

Talking I DID IT

Thanks to everybody for your hasty posts. I read somewhere in here that you can fix this problem in RH9 by turning PNP OS off and turning IRQ to VGA on in your BIOS, then running /sbin/modprobe nvidia. Worked like a charm, im running my card at all its capacity . Ill probably put a small guide for Red Hat 9 as I see there is alot of people with my same problems who havent worked it out. Again, thanks to everybody.
