I would think you really need the entire slackware/d tree if you want to build a kernel.
Your sidebar and sig state Slack 9.0, but the message appears to refer to a desire to upgrade the kernel from 2.4.18 to 2.4.20. Is this correct? Slack 9.0 comes with 2.4.20. not 2.4.18. Slack 8.1 I think was based on 2.4.18.
In reference to your command issue. Your working directory needs to be the root of the kernel sources. So that if you extract the tar file from the /usr/src working directory, then the source should be in /usr/src/linux.
If it is Slack 9.0 then it most likely did not include the kernel sources. You will need to download the package from slackware-9.0/slackware/k tree. Use pkgtool to install it. The sources should then be available in /usr/src/linux. You will also need the config file for your current kernel if you want to begin with your current running kernel config. Copy the contig file to /usr/src/linux/.config. Note the period, it is a hidden file. Then run "make oldconfig" from the /usr/src/linux working directory. If kernel upgrade then just press enter at all the prompts. Proceed as normal with building a new kernel. There is a thread at the top of this forum in great detail.
