Which should I install? KDE or GNOME? Which Kernal should I install from the slack CD? What is the differece between KDE and Gnome and which is like the "best" Kernal or "most" prefered? Thanks!

There are a million threads on this. Install them both - you're probably going to want to run some KDE and Gnome-based apps anyway and you'll need the libraries. Might as well install both IDEs and try them both out and decide for yourself. For kernels, if it boots, go with it. If you want something better, you might as well compile your own.

I'm confused - didn't you just install Slack? They should have been installed unless you picked a customized install and deselected them. To be honest, I'm not really sure how you'd install them in that you need several packages - but it should all be on your CD so just 'installpkg' everything KDE and Gnome related, except maybe some i18n (internationalization) stuff. I guess you can get by without that and some other things but you want to make sure you get all of the essentials. And maybe there's just a 'gimme Gnome' option in pkgtool. I've never tried to use it that way. I can't remember where Gnome is - KDE is pretty easy because I think it's all in /kde on the disks or ftp mirrors.

As far as switching between them, the simplest is 'xwmconfig' which brings up a text menu you can choose from.

This is why I always do a full install, then use pkgtool to remove that I don't need. It would be nice to know how to just leave certain libraries installed while getting rid of GNOME or KDE's Window Managers. For example, if I chose to stick with GNOME, maybe uninstall KDE's Desktop Manager but leave its libraries installed so I could use KDE apps inside GNOME.
