KDE Plasma: "AUDIO VOLUME" vs "Volume Control (kmix)"

I've been having a look how the other half live, trying KDE and all the newfangled stuff out of my fresh install.

Question: what's the deal with these two volume controls that both show up in the status tray, and appear to do the same thing.

I have no idea either. Disabling kmix is one of the first things I do

This is the result of installing both of kmix and plasma-pa packages.

The main difference between them is that KMix has support for PulseAudio and ALSA, while Plasma PA has (obviously) support for PulseAudio only.

You can chose which one you like better and disable or remove/blacklist the other one. I for one, I prefer the Plasma PA.

I use pulseaudio (or pipewire) so I end up using the volume controls provided by plasma-pa and disabling kmix.

If you go the other way to disable pulseaudio and run alsa directly then plasma-pa becomes useless, but you still have kmix/alsa to control audio from plasma's gui.

Cheers LC. I stuck with Kmix: I think I prefer the side by side sliders to the way the other volume control presents them.

With Plasma 5 there are various ways to show/hide/disable these system tray items. Right click on that triangle thingy and "configure system tray" -> "entries"

Just in case someone is not so familiar with Plasma 5.

I also disable kmix in plasma, but it has been useful in the past when i played with fluxbox because it can be run standalone as a system tray application, avoiding the need to install a separate volume indicator
