KDE fails but xfce works - Slackware 15.

I cannot get KDE to run. If I try startplasma-X11 or xinitrc.kde I get the following message.
Code:
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.
echo $DISPLAY shows nothing. If I do xinitrc.xfce, xfce runs fine. If I do startx I get a blank screen with a pointer for a few seconds and then I am returned to the command line. I don't see any errors messages, but I do see server terminated successfully. I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. If it helps I am using the NVIDIA 470.74 module for my GT-720.

I found the problem. I accidentally restored .kde and .xinitrc from my backup. Once I removed those files kde started working fine.
