Just Installed Slack

Well that was pretty painless. I installed Slack and have it up and running with FLuxbox and network up and running. All in all I'd say it was a pretty good install.

I'm going to play around with it for a few days, test out the package installations and such and see what I think of it. I have to say the installer reminded a lot of DOS. (Not a bad thing at all)

Good luck with your Slack install. I used to hear and read about how difficult it was to install Slackware, but when it came to the actual install, I found it quite easy.

I guess after doing a full stage1 Gentoo install, most anything is a piece of cake (except maybe LFS)

Enjoy your Slackware I am enjoying mine and it is a fun learning tool and even has some fun games. Upgrade your also drivers too, the new rc2 1.0.9 is wonderful. May take a little doing, but it made my sound clearer

Spent some time playing around with Slack and I have to say I'm pretty happy with it. Everything is where you would expect it to be and easy to configure as I don't need to search for mysteriously located config files.

I really expected to have more trouble getting things up and running as Slack's package tool doesn't use dependency checking, but it was surprisingly easy. I installed slapt-get which does make things a bit easier to do but it seems there are a lot of things not on the server or it's search function stinks. Not sure which yet.

Linuxpackages.net seems like an invaluable resource. So far, most of what I wanted could be found there.

I'll play around with it some more to see if I find anything I don't like, but so far I'm pretty pleased. Maybe I should have tried Slack a few years ago.

Not to start another holy war, but you might want to try Swaret (http://swaret.sourceforge.net) -- I too think that Slapt-get's search is horrible; and I've never had a single problem with Swaret in nearly a year on Slack-Current.

It is an auto update program with a bit of dependency checking.

Installed Swaret but it doesn't seem to work very well. Will play around with the config file some more. Finally got slapt-get configured so that it's working pretty well.

I have been experiencing and odd problem with my pcmcia NIC and dhcp but I'll post that in another thread as I haven't been able to locate a solution through searching the forum or googling.
