I would guess that vesa framebuffer feature is not compiled as built-in in kernel or console framebuffer is missing.
You can always boot with vga console by edit your lilo.conf and put a kernel parameter as :
append="vga=normal"
Try if it works

For your sound problem, run "alsamixer" and check if a channel is muted. Save settings with "alsactl store"

im having the same sound problem via the sblive. it detects the card fine, but it just wont give me sound output. i recompiled the 2.6.7 again, and got sound on first reboot. halfway through a song, the comp freezes (but i can still move mouse pointer but cant click anything), so i reset it to find the sound gone once again... :/

Fixing Sound Card Issues

For sound issues check /var/log/syslog and look for error messages related to your sound card driver? Then you can look up the error message on google and see if you have to pass the driver a parameter. It would help us diagnose the problem if you could post relevant information from the following files:
/var/log/syslog
output from lsmod
output from lspci -v
/etc/modules.conf

Sometimes alsaconf does not detect the proper sound card. Good luck!

Thanks for all your help guys, everything is working fine, seems like all the problems were solved by making the correct modules be static.

Thanks
