I all, i've just installed slack9.1, upgrading from 9. I modified inittab for starting X at the boot, and it loaded GNOME. I've never tried it, but now i like it. just a problem, running KDE there was kppp to dial up to internet. But running gnome2.4 how can i do? I've a 56k modem.

thanks

Just run "kppp" from "gnome-terminal" or Run Dialog. Or if you want to ignore KDE apps, use "wvdial".

Slack pppsetup

There's a Internet PPP setup script.. .(Think it's pppsetup) from the command-line...

It asks questions and will build the settings for connecting by modem...

It creates command-lines like: ppp-go and ppp-stop

THEN, you can put the modem-lights APPLET on your Gnome pannel and insert the ppp-go command in the preference of this applet (There's a place to insert connexion and disconnexion commands)...

It works 100% for me and I love it more than KPPP... (with the LED that tells me if the modem is connected or not... Very usefull when connexion is lost...)

I Think that there must be some little tweaking to be done as root to able other users to use the ppp-go command....

I've got all the steps I've used in a document at home... (Sorry i'm at work right now!)

change acess rights for files chat, ppp-go, ppp-stop and pppd to 6755 (they are in /usr/sbin) and for files options and pppscript to 0666 (they are in /etc/ppp)

Put the modem-lights applet on your gnome panel (right-click on panel -> add to panel -> internet -> modem lights) and insert /usr/sbin/ppp-go and /usr/sbin/ppp-stop in the preference of this applet
