installing gtk+ 2.22.1 on slackware 13.1

ive been trying to install gtk+ 2.22.1 from source on my slackware 13 machine so i can compile and install the new gimp.
i have installed all the dependencies, and running configure shows no errors.

when i run make or make install, however, it exits with strange errors and doesnt install anything. i know all the dependencies have been installed correctly, but i cant install gimp until i get the most recent version of gtk+ up and running. here is the results of my configure:

When you get past that, there will very likely be dozens of additional hurdles if my own experience counts. Unless you're up for a long term project and a major learning experience (nothing wrong with that!), you'd be better off just moving to -current.

well i'm up for the project and the learning, plus, i have everything else i want installed on this already. i really just want to get the new gimp up and running, everything else seems to compile and install very easily and straightforward.

even this issue is probably a user error, and simply upgrading to something that will have it run out of the box isnt going to help me with that error in the future, is it?

Is that libgio from glib-2.26.1? You'll need a glib-2.26.x. If it is, make sure you don't have an old glib2 installed, possibly creating ambiguous headers.

Good luck!

any thoughts?

i knew to first use make clean, ldconfig, etc, and glib-2.26.1 installed without issue.

What version of gimp are you trying to build? If 2.6.11, I'm approaching 100% certainty that it does not require newer gtk+2 than what is available in Slackware 13.1.

Even so, you almost surely have several conflicts between the stuff installed in /usr and the stuff installed in /usr/local. You are creating a textbook case of why it's generally not a good idea to (attempt to) replace packages provided with the system. Debian makes that difficult, while Slackware makes it easy, but neither makes it a good idea.

2.7.1 is a development release, right?

gimp-2.7.1 compiles on x86_64 -current using the stock gimp.SlackBuild...

As far as the problems trademark91 is facing, one way to avoid things like header mismatches (I suspect old headers in /usr/include could be behind those errors) is to use the SlackBuilds to build new packages, and then install them with upgradepkg. When testing new things here, I avoid building directly to the machine (even in /usr/local) wherever possible. It makes things easier to track, and it allows me to remove all traces of builds that didn't work out quite right.
