how to uninstall?

hi, (me noob to pls try to make it simple)

i am trying to figure out how to uninstall programs.
i made a full install of slack, now that i know my way a bit more around it, i kind of know which programs i need and don't need.

so what would be the steps to uninstall a prog (to wipe it completely of my system)?

You don't say what kind of package. If Slackware package use removepkg appname. Or you can use pkgtool to look at all and mark ones for removal.

If non Slackware package, it is more of a problem. Read up on checkinstall and use it to install from now on. If you still have the folder you built and installed from you can try make uninstall. If not, it will be all by hand.

You can do removepkg <pkgname> to do one at a time or you could open up pkgtool and there is a place to go through the list of all installed packages and check which ones you want to remove in one swoop.

If its something thats been compiled but cannot be make uninstalled I think you have to track down all the various files and delete them the old fashioned way.

2 options for uninstalling compiled from scratch software if the source dir is still available:
Code:
cd /the/dir/containing/the/source/files
make uninstall
Or avoid this and make a package of your compiled source using the checkinstall package (in the extra dir on the slackware disks) . Instead of typing 'make install' you can type 'checkinstall' and a removeable package will be installed.

A package can be removed using
Code:
removepkg /var/log/packages/<package name>
All installed packagenames are listed there.
