how to create error log for broken apps?

How can I generate an error log for a particular application?

Sorry I should probably know this by now but...here's my problem, using Slack 10.1 and installed preconfigured bittorrent form /extras. It worked fine a couple of times then quit. Thinking I messed up something installing/uninstalling stuff(I like to check out lots of different apps) I tried uninstalling/reinstalling including different versions. (works in windows sometimes :P) It just begins to start and immediately closes.

I need to learn how to generate an (error log)? for any particular app so I can begin to fiqure out why something like this is happening and maybe fix it on my own. Can some one point me in the right direction or give me a quick tutorial.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help.

Well, what kind of error log do you want? What EXACTLY happens with bittorrent? Also, have you ever tried azureus for BT? I prefer it.

You can try something like 'strace' with bittorrent, but that will give you LARGE amounts of VERY verbose information. Which I guess can be both good and bad.

The kind that tells me exactly what's wrong and exactly how to fix it

That's just it...I don't know what bittorrent is doing. I'm wondering if there is a way to find out what it is or isn't doing.

What happens is not much...I click on a torrent link, the save/open window in my browser pops up, I choose open with "btdownloadxterm.sh", bittorrent opens for an instant(too quick to read anything) and closes. That's all.

It seems odd that it worked the first couple of times I used it. I tried Ktorrent, and a couple other builds of bittorrent, same thing. I'm thinking it isn't bittorent but perhaps something else not responding to it but that's a guess. I'll give azureus a try and see what happens.

Maybe you upgraded the Python package? The wrong python might break bittorrent.
Try saving a .torrent file to the local disk and then run
Code:
btdownloadxterm.sh your_downloaded.torrent
and see if that gives error messages.

Cheers, Eric

Alien Bob, I think you're right about python. I installed pygtk or updated it around the same time.
I'm going change things back just to confirm that to myself but I'm pretty sure your right.
Running that command produced the same results as before with no error mesg.

Matir, I installed azureus and it works

I'm torrenting again and today i picked up 'A Practical Guide to Linux' by Mark Sobel.
900 pages of learnin' I'm going in deep...see you on the other side

Thanks guys,
