There are plenty of apps on disc 2, especially in the recent -current discs on which gnome no longer exists... all of the window managers are on disc 2, including flux, xfce, fvwm, windowmaker,etc..
If you would like to use the 2.6 kernel without compiling your own, there is a package on disc 2 that you can use... it's not too difficult and I wrote a howto for doing it also. Check out

You don't 'need' disc 2, so if you don't have a very fast connection, you may not want to worry about it. But if it's going to be your first time installing slackware, you might want it, just in case you want to start with an 'everything' install, then remove what you don't want/need.
