How best to install deb package

I am trying to install Scratch (Scratch Website) for an edX course I am taking. It only comes in a deb or rpm. I tried deb2pkg and alien commands but both are saying they do not exist.

I do not want to mess up my install if I can help it. I am not sure the best way to go.

Thanks for advice and tips!

Why don't you use an rpm package? rpm2tgz comes with stock Slackware. Bear in mind that you'll still need squeak. See http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=69467

Thanks. I should have thought about the rpm. Missed the squeak part, thanks for the catch on that. I'll do a little more checking and see what I can do. I appreciate getting pointed the right way

Some time ago, I was looking for appropriate drivers for a pair of Brother printers (one laser printer, one printer/scanner combo). The Brother website only offered DEB and RPM packages to download. I chose the RPM drivers, converted them with rpm2tgz and installed them using installpkg. Had to make a few minor adjustments, but I'd say RPM is the format you want.

The rpm worked but now I have to get the squeak part. After reading the steps and since I have this on my windows machine, quite frankly, the heck with it... I do appreciate the help though.

I read the Scratch site too quickly and thought all I needed was in the rpm. This is one of the "not worth it" things in my opinion. I'll just finish that assignment in windows.

Next week they start C so I am all set for that
