install destination of deb package

Hi,

I am new to deb package. I have read some docs, but did not know how to specify the destination for to-be-installed files. For example, I want to install under user's home directory. How to specify that?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Or, what is the default destination?

'lesspipe <package>.deb' or 'less <package>.deb'
will show file locations for a non installed package.

'dpkg -L <package>' : locations, an installed package.

Or you can look into the file list online :
Example http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/leafpad
.. and find the link 'list of files' :
→ → Last section on the page
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/i386/leafpad/filelist

And finally : You can create a local "all packages file list" :
1) sudo apt-get install apt-file
2) apt-file update ( will download the lists.)
3) apt-file list <package>
... will then display the file list for the package.
Can also do: apt-file search <file> and apt-file search path/to/<file>
...

Sorry, I did not make my question clear.

I want to create a .deb file and want to know how to specify the desired location, for example, to user's home directory.

I am making a deb package.

I want to specify desired installation destination directory. May be there is no way to do that. If so, how do I know where the file has been installed in postinst script?

Thanks.

Section 7.6
http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-pkg_basics.en.html

I don't think, the postinst scripts do anything with file
location, except may be some links in /etc/alternatives ?

..
