Here's one for you guys...CD spinning up constantly in 12.2 XFCE

I keep my Civ IV cd in the drive because I boot daily into windows to run it.....but while in Slack, the CD drive keeps spinning up every 20 seconds or so...driving me nuts...it's showing the CD on the desktop as 'unmounted'...is there a setting somewhere? I'm still learning Slack so could use some guidance on this one.

Hi,

Basically the system is trying to recognize the disc in the device. Just eject it or write a rule for your 'udev'.

Interesting. First stab in the dark, try the following:

ps ax | grep polling

Then look at the output to see whether the drive is being polled at approximately 20 second intervals.

Another possibility: udev rules.

Another idea if you are using KDE: Open the Control Center. Select KDE Components. Select Service Manager. Stop Media Notifier Daemon and KDED Media Manager. Note: You won't receive any pop-up dialog boxes while the two KDE services are off.

I think recently I read that disabling DMA has helped some weird CD drive problems.

Side note: If your machine has the hardware muscle, perhaps consider installing VirtualBox to run Windows? You then could make an ISO image of the CD, and mount the ISO image when in VirtualBox rather than the actual CD. Saves wear and tear and is faster. I do this with all of my virtual machines. I seldom use an actual DVD/CD disk any more.

Code:
bash-3.1$ ps ax | grep polling
 3539 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: polling /dev/sr0 (every 2 sec)
bash-3.1$
What I've done is mount it to stop the polling....maybe set something in fstab for that? This is my fstab currently:

Code:
/dev/sda7 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/sda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/sda3 /vista ntfs-3g umask=000 1 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user,rw 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
EDIT: I do have XP in Virtualbox, but didn't expect much performance for Civ IV out of it....I run some windows programs that way, and share files.
