Hard Drive Noise...Constantly Spinning

I just loaded Ubuntu and for some reason my hard is loud and spins alot. For example if I open a program, I can hear it start up and the machine runs slow for a second or two until the HD is spinning. I know it's not the HD because it works fine in XP. It didn't do it when I first started so I'm thinking maybe it's a process or something. I tried hpdarm -M 128 /dev/hda but that didn't work either. Any ideas...this is really annoying...

Here's a list of current processes. Any look suspicious?

NOTE: I don't think I know how to kill processes and keep them from starting on boot so any help on that would be great too...THANKS
