DMA is automatically enabled in Windows (just looked). Why does it become impossible in Linux?

Just ran:
Code:
hdparm -I /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:

ATAPI CD-ROM, with removable media
        Model Number: _NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A
        Serial Number:
        Firmware Revision: 1.08
Standards:
        Likely used CD-ROM ATAPI-1
Configuration:
        DRQ response: 3ms.
        Packet size: 12 bytes
Capabilities:
        LBA, IORDY(cannot be disabled)
        DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2
             Cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns
        PIO: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
Cycle time: no flow control=120ns IORDY flow control=120ns
Does the * mean that drive is using udma2 mode?
So why does xine-check give me an DMA error?

Because on Linux you've to have compiled the support for your chipset in the kernel.

I have posted in previous post what DMA related I have compiled into my kernel. And I don't understand if DMA (UDMA2) is enabled why xine-check gives me errors.

Just reflashed my bios and cd/dvd drive firmware. Xine-check errors stay the same. So lets forget this dma error (maybe it's xine bug not recognizing udma mode) for now. But how to enable MTRR? I think it should be easier cause it's some X server setting. Any suggestions? Is it enabled in your X server automatically?

mtrr is a kernel option i think it is under processor and features ... i have forgotten the section name.

try:
grep mtrr <Your kernel config file>

it should be set to "y" in the kernel config file.

I was told to bump the thread if I didn't find a solution.
It's nearly impossible that only I in whole LQ have these things not working.
