That was slightly uncalled for IMO. It's not your fault UltimaGuy, as some would have you believe. Reading a canned text file from the originators of the problem isn't going to help you one whit.

This isn't very well known because it only happens on certain older GeForce chips and quite frankly, nVidia has taken a "swept-under-the-rug" stance to it. We are in the same boat so I can identify with your frustration. Ever since nVidia released the "5xxx" series drivers this problem has persisted and it's obvious they're not going to fix it. The nvidia module causes a kernel Oops on X startup, and as you have already seen, you get a black screen and are forced to clamp down on the power button.

Your best and only bet is to look in the archives and grab:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run

For some reason, Nvidia decided to pull their 4620 version from the archives some time ago. 4620 is the newest driver that works and thats the one I'm using right now as I type this. It also was the first version to introduce the "nvidia-settings" command. 4496 and 4620 are still light years beyond that crappy 'nv' driver. I was fortunate enough to archive 4620 before they yanked it. It can be found in my sig link if your interested. You'll have the same problems if you decide to move to a 2.6.x kernel as well. I've also archived a 2.6 4620 in the same area.

Let us know and if that IS your problem, I'd suggest keeping the v4620 2.4 and 2.6 drivers somewhere safe.

ALSO: Your supposed to comment out (#)
Code:
Load "dri"
in your xorg.conf... It shouldn't matter tho. Thats just what they tell you to do... It runs for me with that uncommented. Atleast I think it does...

Hello jong357, you really are a life saver

I downloaded the driver from your sig and also from your link, and guess what? Both are working fine

Thank you very much...I never thought nVidia driver would be the problem....

But now I have downloaded the drivers that are compatible witrh my system and also I have saved your sig link, so that I can get it whenever I want.

Cool. Glad all is well now. The one in my sig link was the last 4xxx driver. I'd use that over the 4496 driver. Like I say, It's also got the nifty 'nvidia-settings' command whereas the 4496 driver doesn't. I'm also thinking about switching ISP's very soon, so you might want to burn both those 2.4/2.6 nvidia drivers to disk or something. They won't be there for much longer... The 4xxx drivers on nvidia's web site won't work with a 2.6 kernel but nvidia-2.6.run on my briefcase site will. I believe I got that from minion.de

Try adding this to your xorg.conf if your interested in some visual and performance tweaks:

Code:
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NVCrush11 [GeForce2 MX Integrated Graphics]"
BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
Option "UseEdidFreqs" "TRUE"
Option "CursorShadow" "TRUE"
Option "CursorShadowAlpha" "64"
Option "CursorShadowXOffset" "4"
Option "CursorShadowYOffset" "2"
Option "NvAGP" "3"
EndSection
Should give you a MINOR improvement on Frame Rates and it gives you a nifty shadow under your cursor...
