That was slightly uncalled for IMO. It's not your fault UltimaGuy, as some would have you believe. Reading a canned text file from the originators of the problem isn't going to help you one whit.
This isn't very well known because it only happens on certain older GeForce chips and quite frankly, nVidia has taken a "swept-under-the-rug" stance to it. We are in the same boat so I can identify with your frustration. Ever since nVidia released the "5xxx" series drivers this problem has persisted and it's obvious they're not going to fix it. The nvidia module causes a kernel Oops on X startup, and as you have already seen, you get a black screen and are forced to clamp down on the power button.
Your best and only bet is to look in the archives and grab:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
For some reason, Nvidia decided to pull their 4620 version from the archives some time ago. 4620 is the newest driver that works and thats the one I'm using right now as I type this. It also was the first version to introduce the "nvidia-settings" command. 4496 and 4620 are still light years beyond that crappy 'nv' driver. I was fortunate enough to archive 4620 before they yanked it. It can be found in my sig link if your interested. You'll have the same problems if you decide to move to a 2.6.x kernel as well. I've also archived a 2.6 4620 in the same area.
Let us know and if that IS your problem, I'd suggest keeping the v4620 2.4 and 2.6 drivers somewhere safe.
ALSO: Your supposed to comment out (#)
in your xorg.conf... It shouldn't matter tho. Thats just what they tell you to do...
It runs for me with that uncommented. Atleast I think it does...
