Hello to all the slackers registered at this forum!

Hello to the Users of the Slackware Linux Operating System!
I want to say that I am already a happy Slackware 13.1 user.
I find Slackware a wonderful operating system and love the way it performs on my 5 year old (not too old) machine - really exciting experience!
The installation was not so difficult, described by some people, may be the configuration and the installation of additional software packages will be a little more time consuming, but it is worth the efforts.
I recommend Slackware Linux to everyone who wants to know more about the inner processes in Linux and to take control over the system where he/she desires.
Wish You all the best and enjoy your experience with "the oldest surviving linux distribution"!

Welcome.

Don't forget to look at the commonly trusted extra slackware package/script repositories before trying to build it your self from scratch:

www.slackbuilds.org

Alien Bob's
http://connie.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/
Multilib
http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...kware:multilib

Workman's
http://rlworkman.net/pkgs/

don't forget sbopkg if you like automatic tools for compiling packages at slackbuilds.org and slapt-get if you want dependency resolution for the official Slackware packages.

Hi monfen,
Welcome to LQ. As lumak has already advised - I strongly recommend installing sbopkg which is a really useful tool for building Slackbuilds. Slackbuilds are an integral part of Slackware, in fact it's how Slackware itself builds it's packages. Just look at the /source directory on the installation media and the SlackBuilds website to get an idea.

monfen,

After you'll fine tune your desktop to your needs and taste don't omit to visit This is my Slackware desktop... mega thread and share the image of your desktop. Or look through that thread just now to find some inspirations and configuration tips.

Welcome!

I have a Slackware-oriented Linux website; see my sig. It's written with the assumption that the reader knows nothing at all about Linux. I'm currently writing a tutorial on software management which will talk about sbopkg and other things.

Welcome to LQ. You can also try src2pkg which I find useful as well. It makes slack packages out of source code.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ & Slackware!

I do suggest that you read the available documentation on the Slackware install media. Lot of new user problems could be avoided if the user just reads the available docs.

Search here on LQ as most problems will already have been addressed. <Linux> - Google is great!

I also suggest that you look at 'How to Ask Questions the Smart Way' so in the future your queries provide information that will aid us in diagnosis of the problem/query.

At one point you will need to add packages so I suggest Slackbuilds as a Good source of packages, plus read the FAQ.

You're going to need mirrors at one point so look at;

Official List of MirrorsAlphaGeek's Unofficial Mirror List <<<<<<< Great

LinuxQuestions.org > ISOs > SlackwareŽ

elektroni <-FTP
Oregon State <- FTP/HTTP + Open Source Lab + bandwidth of over 1 gigabit per second

The Linux Mirror Project

Just a few more useful links;

SlackwareŽ Essentials
SlackwareŽ Basics
Linux Documentation Project
Rute Tutorial & Exposition
Linux Command Guide
Bash Reference Manual
Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide
Linux Newbie Admin Guide

The above links and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!
