Fresh 12.1 Install. X Starts in Root, not as user

well it did start as user, then I installed the ATI driver :P

Tried a few versions 8.4 and 8.6 and both present the same error.

Being that whilst logged in at root, X loads fine. Exit out to normal user, X loads for 2 seconds then carks it back to the term

This is confusing for it was only after I installed the ATI driver did this problem present itself. Using stock ATI module everything is barmy

What have I forgotten ? :S :P

further confusion.. rebooted.. (just for something to do) login as user, "startx"

now I'm presented with a black screen and an active mouse with a cross i can move around and play with :P

crtl alt backspace dumps me in a terminal with xinit whining about being;
-temporarily unavailable, unable to connect to X.
-no such process
-error in locking authority file

I had changed me .xinitrc file to include a script to turn numlock on which i had completely forgotten about.

delete the file, startx all is barmy

Thanks for being a wall I could mutter my thoughts against

have you also tried setting up the /etc/inittab to automatically run into a graphical mode so that you don't have to type "startx"?

just edit the /etc/inittab and change
Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:
to
Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:
