OpenOffice starts as root, but not user

I have had OpenOffice installed for a while now. Today, all of a sudden, I cannot start the program as a user. I type /opt/openoffice.org2.0/program/soffice and nothing happens -- no program, no console output, nothing. The return value is 0. I can't run any of the binary programs either, the same thing happens. As root, they all work fine. How can I make them work as a user?

Maybe try running as regular user, but first do "su".
It might tell you if it is a permission problem, possilbly related to the group the user belongs to.

No, that's the thing, it doesn't tell me anything at all, which is why I'm stumped. This is what I do:

Code:
[wynd@l0s2 ~]$ cd /opt/openoffice.org2.0/program/
[wynd@l0s2 program]$ ./soffice
[wynd@l0s2 program]$
Something is definitely loading when I type the command, because the first time I try it it takes a while to "finish" and every time after that it takes less time, as if the program were already in RAM. However, like I said, no window.

Got it! I happened to look in my /tmp directory and I saw some files like:

OSL_PIPE_0_SingleOfficeIPC_95765e3e9bf114803183efc83ea35cc
OSL_PIPE_1000_SingleOfficeIPC_95765e3e9bf114803183efc83ea35cc

I deleted them as root and it works now. They seem to be stale sockets or something, anyone know what they are?
