Fixed Slackware 10 + Alsamixer Problem On IBM X31

As mentioned in this thread, I was getting a "No mixer elems found" error when I ran alsamixer, right after installing Slackware 10 on my IBM ThinkPad X31. This problem, IIRC, affects the Intel 8x0 built-in sound and hotplugging. I found the solution, I think. This suggestion was given on a related problem on ALSA's bugtracking system site:
Quote:
make sure that intel8x0m (modem) module is not loaded via hotplug. hotplug tends to load it automatically, and it breaks the preferred order of modules.

you can avoid hotplugging of intel8x0m by adding snd-intel8x0m to /etc/hotplug/blacklist.
Tried it, and it worked.

Also, I noticed that the volume and mute buttons were working, which surprised me. Of course, you can't see the volume levels that appear on the bottom of the screen.

One problem down, many more to go...

the volume up/down buttons are "hardware" (at least on my T40 i believe they are)
this means they work without any software component

I fixed the problem on my X31 by accident when I compiled in the sound to the kernel and left the modem as a module.

snd_via82xx_modem --same deal

I had exactly the same problem with my crappy averatec notebook equipped with via's sound. So it's not just Intel.

Just thought I would add that, since I put off trying this fix first because I didn't have intel stuff.

Oh yeah, thanks a bunch!
