Firefox Issues slackware 12.0

Hello all
Iam currently running slackware 12 new install with the generic-smp kernel,i have a small issue with firefox in that it opens up fine when i click on the icon in tasbar and runs without issue,if for some reason i click it again to run it again whilst it is still open it just goes into a loop with a spinning icon and eventually does not open up!!!!

if when running firefox,i then from the terminal run firefox again it opens up without a problem, and i have two windows open then both with firefox...

i always open up new tabs normall when viewing other pages but sometimes i forget and click on firefox icon,it would begood if someone can help me sort out why this is happening,i dont think this is unique to slackware at all as i have seen this behavouir on other distro`s as well..

i hope this makes sense

regards

Hi,

You need to use the 'new window' option from your 'tool bar' or 'File'. I've used Firefox with xfce and find that to try to have more that one Mozilla application of Firefox open causes problems with the application.

It indeed is not Slackware related problem but a Mozilla application problem. You will just have too remember to use the application specific tools to open multiple windows or tabs.

thanks for your reply, yes i have seen this on a number of linux distro`s ,its one of those annoying little things but not really a major problem, iam dual booting slackware with pclinux0s 2007 and that doesn`t have a problem with firefox and multiple copies running so that is why i asked the question, thanks for your prompt reply..

Have you got the most recent version of firefox? A new slackware package was released recently. I don't have the problem you have, but I did get frequent crashes which seem to have stopped.

I don't know what's happening in your system, but on mine, when I click on the firefox icon again, it opens another window... (also, try ctrl-n for new window)

Hi,

The key 'cntrl-n' opens a new window not a new application session. I've got Slackware 12 on a test bench system, I haven't tried the duplicate session that we are speaking of. I know that with 11 and xfce there was a problem with 1.5.

I'll try it to see what happens. I think that the Firefox is 2.0.0.4 for the Slackware 12.

Hi,

I just tried the Mozilla Firefox launch on KDE 3.5. You will get an error message if you attempt to load multiple Firefox while kde is loading. After the desktop is up then your attempt to load another Firefox the environment attempts to load the application but then just opens a new window session.

After the application is up and you attempt to open additional sessions you just get new windows.

I haven't tried xfce on Slackware 12, I usually have that on my small systems and laptops when I want a desktop.

todders: I've had the same problem before in KDE, and for whatever reason, I don't have that problem now. Try this:
1. Delete your Firefox button (right click, "Remove Firefox button")
2. Right click on the panel(or another button) and select Panel menu -> Add Application to Panel -> Internet -> Firefox - Web Browser.
I don't know if that will fix it, but I do think it's worth a try.

Also, I turned off launch feedback in KDE (the bouncing cursor) as I've noticed if an application starts and immediately exits with an error, the bouncing cursor sticks around for thirty seconds (which I find quite annoying.) This can be done in KDE Control center in the "Appearance & Themes" Section under the "Launch Feedback" tab.

Let us know how it turns out!

P.S. I just realized I assumed you were using KDE with asking. If you are not using KDE, check to make sure your application launcher is either using /usr/share/applications/mozilla-firefox.desktop or that is in fact calling /usr/bin/firefox (which on my system is a shell script which actually does the work of starting firefox for me.)

Good luck!

If all you want to do is get rid of the busy icon in the taskbar, then just go to
K-Menu -> Settings -> Appearance & Themes -> Launch Feedback
and uncheck the box labeled "Enable taskbar notification."

I hope that helps!
