Also, I don't know what has happened recently, but Firefox started freezing/crashing a lot while working with Gmail. Anybody else experienced similar behavior?

FF 3.01 working fine over here, not crashing with Gmail.
works fine for me as well. I'm using Slackware 12.1 and I repackaged the official FF binaries using the Slackware slackBuilds. How is your FF installed and what version of Slackware are you using? The Gmail problem may be profile related, so I also recommend trying out a fresh test profile.
I'm running Slackware 12.1 and Firefox 3.0.1 which is a binary package that Pat prepared for -current. I'm wondering if FireGPG has something to do with this. Here is a list of the extensions I have: http://tinyurl.com/658xyq
Everything used to work pretty smoothly, especially in the beginning when I had a new profile. I don't know what has happened recently that would cause such freezes, but it's quite annoying.
Try clearing your cache, cookies, etc. If you think it is a problem with your addons then disable all of them (safe mode) and see. Then re-enable them one by one and check.

I'm quite sure it is an add-ons matter, because with a new profile everything seems to be OK and the problems quickly become worse.
BTW, if you are a web developer, wouldn't Seamonkey fit you better (just an idea...).
