Everything is super fast, fluxbox & afterstep starts in a second. However, XFCE takes40-60 seconds to load. I can see flickering of the splashscreen as well.
Any idea of where I could start to identify what is hanging the startup of XFCE? Once loaded, it flies.

I have heard occasional reports that the splash screen (found in the Settings Manager) can sometimes hang things up, but the more common thing that may be at work is gnome/kde services loading. If you go to the Settings Manager and open up Sessions and Startup, go to the Advanced tab and see if any of those boxes are checked. You can also go into Autostarted Apps and see what tries to load with the XFCE session.
Look through ~/.xsession-errors log file for error messages that could identify your problems.
Check if you have properly configured hostname translation for your localhost also.
