Question Dual Screen configuration under Slackware 10.2 (Xorg v. 6.8.2)


Hello,

I have attached a second screen to my NVIDIA Geforce Ti 4200 Card, i have been searching linuxquestions.org for help on this and found this:

I have modified my xorg.conf file, but now when i "startx" only the main monitor (Screen0) works and i get: (WW) NVIDIA: More than one matching Device section found: Videocard1

Can someone tell me whatīs wrong? I must have overseen something which i just donīt find.

Based on your post I'm guessing you have a dual head video card (2 VGA ports, or 1 VGA and 1 DVI).

Have you installed the Nvidia drivers?

Okay. A couple of things...

1. nVidia cards (very annoyingly) tend to do EDID on only one of their two outputs, usually the DVI port. Without it, X tends to make very poor decisions about the size of the display and the resulting DPI settings. I recommend you clean up your monitor declarations a bit and add DisplaySize declarations to each, like so:

If you can't find the technical specifications for your monitor that include mention of what size the display is (in millimeters) then plug them in to the DVI port (even if you're using the DVI->VGA adapter) one at time, start X, kill X, and then check /var/log/Xorg.0.log and search for "EDID". You'll see X talking to the monitor and getting the display size information from it (and hopefully getting it correct). There is also a utility called ddcxinfo which you can use to probe things directly without having to start and kill X. The latest copy of it that I'm aware of resides as ddcxinfo-arch-0.8. It's fairly trivial to build (you just run `make` and that's all) and figure out. If EDID is available, it'll tell you all sorts of fun things as well as generate xorg.conf stanzas for you.

2. Make sure you don't have another copy of xorg.conf sitting around somewhere in the way (like in /root) because that error message can't be coming from the configuration file you posted. You definitely only have that identifier being used once. X is reading something else. See `man xorg.conf` for a list of the places it might be checking before getting around to looking at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

3. Modelines really suck tremendously. Don't use them unless your monitors are at least ten years old and you can't get a particular resolution centered properly on the screen some other way. You can define the resolutions you find to be tolerable on a per-display basis like this and X will figure the rest out in a semi-intelligent manner on it's own:

4. Since you're using an nVidia card, we can be relatively sure it's not going to err in detecting how much RAM is on the card. It doesn't try to detect things when you tell it tho, and that might not work out as well as it should. Really the only thing even mildly tricky about this is that you'll need/want to specify the BusID of your card (check `lspci -v` to find out what it is) in both stanzas for the card (yes, as if you had two cards):
