Does Slackware 12.2 work with 4GB?

Hi,

I am planning to put on 4GB on my Slackware 12.2 notebook.
I have read some thinks about 4GB and 32bits limit/barrier and my question is: Will Slackware 12.2 recognize and use 4GB?

Or, to use all the 4GB I will need to migrate to Slamd64?

Thanks.

To use all the 4GB you will need a 64bit OS. Slamd64 would be an option, but you can migrate to Slackware64 even, which is in development right now - see http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware64-current/ and will be released later this year as Slackware 13.0.

Or rebuild your kernel using Eric's guide:

So,

Slackware 12.2 will not recognize all the 4GB. Ok, I understand that.

But it will run if I replace the actual 1GB with the 4GB?

Yes it will.
I use 8 GBs on my box that runs:
Slack 12.2
Slack-Current
Slack64-Current
Slamd64-Current

Your Slack12.2 system will detect "aprox" 3GB

As stated earlier, you can use Alien Bob's guide to squeeze out the extra 1 GB but you may not really notice a big difference between 3 & 4 GBs.

4GB + 32bit architecture (PAE)

I have slackware 12.2 and 4GB of RAM
The first time I installed slackware, only a total of
3GB of RAM was seen.
I rebuilt the kernel since and in my config
instead of
HIGHMEM4G=y
I selected
HIGHMEM64G=y

that's the only way to get the PAE selected
CONFIG_X86_PAE=y

and I kept the 32bit architecture
CONFIG_X86_32=y

now here's the total RAM seen
# head -n1 /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 4143788 kB
