Do you know what you did that made the flicker go away for future reference if anyone else has the problem?
Not sure.
1)I disable compositing and desktop effects.
2)But I just came in from outside, the default screensaver was
on and I could see flickering.
Now that brianL has shown me how to turn that one off. We can see
what happens.

Ah, I read your post wrong, I thought all the effects had actually been disabled before it stopped flickering. You should try installing the driver brianL mentioned, there was a post on the Arch forums about nvidia drivers having similar issues to what you have and the driver fixed it for some people.

I'm definitely going to do that. I still do get a flicker from time to
time. I'll report back when I have that done.
There are newer nvidia drivers than the one I'm using, you could try one of them.
I ran xorgsetup, it probed my card without comment. Still a little
flicker from time to time and I got kicked out of x while watching a
video on firefox.
1)How do I acquire a different nvidia driver?
2)How do I install it?
URLs for documentation could be all I need.
thanks

log in as root, cd to wherever you downloaded it to, and run:
Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-whatever-number-it-is-pkg2.run
Then, as far as I remember, answer yes to all the questions. It will write a new xorg.conf and back-up the old one.

I haven't used this method, but lots of Slackers have (I think).
Get the kernel and driver SlackBuilds, and follow the instructions:
