cups works sometimes

...which implies, of course, that it doesn't work sometimes. So, I've got a usb attached printer on my server. I have two different laptops on the network. Both are configured with the same ipp uri for the printer. One prints fine, the other gives the message "backend failed". All computers are using the same cups version (from Slack 12).

So I have two questions:

1. Does anyone have a suggestion for getting cups to work more consistently?
2. Is sharing a printer via samba more reliable than using cups?

Thanks,
Brian

Hello,

That's not a very descriptive error message.

If both computers have the same distribution of Linux and the same CUPS version - I'd say that that problem is in your CUPS configuration (other than the ipp uri, which you say is the same).

Thus, I would first compare the CUPS configuration between the two computers.

Both are using the default configuration. I agree it is not a very useful error message.

...and this morning it worked. That's my concern. Why does it work sometimes and not other times?
