Cups test page works, nothing else.

This question has already been asked two months ago:

http://linuxquestions.org/questions/...hreadid=133511

but not answered.

"http://localhost:631/admin" allowed me to configure my printer and print test pages.

Then... kde control centre has cups as the default printing method and shows the printer as working. But... how do I print anything at all ?

As suggested in the cups tutorial, I tried "lp -p fool /etc/motd" and "lp -p foo1 /etc/motd" in a console but it doesn't work.

This is probably a very very stupid question, since the printer works but I don't know how to tell cups to print to it :/

Thanks in advance,
-Danodare

did you check in /var/log/cups
and look at the error_log and see if its spitting out an error that
may be useful in the troubleshooting?

I had the same problem. I fixed it by:

removepkg lprng*

the lprng and cups don't play well together

reboot after your remove the lprng package and you *should* be ok.

DrOzz: "/var/log/cups/error_log" has no errors, since cups works fine.

The problem is how to tell cups to print something from outside cups.

Checking into "lprng" to try and see if that could be my problem. Obviously if lp and lpr are not associated to cups, that could be it.

Thanks in advance for any help,

It works .

I didn't actually uninstall lprng, but I simply used

lp-cups instead of lp
lpr-cups instead of lpr

When I get proficient in linux, I will change the symbolic links in order for this to be automatic. I currently have no idea how to change a symbolic link

Thanks a lot !

Did you try just running kwrite and telling it to print, I tried piping stuff to /dev/lp and stuff like that, but when I just ran a program it knew exactly what to do. Perhaps its because the programs are all integrated into KDE.

Actually, all kde programs worked fine, I realized that a bit late. Only non-kde programs were not behaving as they should.

In particular, Mozilla used "lpr", which is associated to LPD/LPRng. I replaced in Mozilla "lpr" by "lpr-cups", and it printed a web page for the first time

Thanks, slackwarefan

Matt3333. Don't take this the wrong way because I really like your sig. But the "your" in '...your all the same' is a contraction for "you are" and therefore should be you're. I'm way out of line and far off topic... sorry.

Ya but.... If you say it out loud to your self saying "you are" Like eg. ..because you are all the same" doesnt sound great. or "..Because you're all the same" sounds better than "youu are" but "your" just goes good with the saying! Anyways so hows the winter in T.O this year? hehe

Ya and also English isn't my strong suit. English Teachers have it out for me.
