I just installed the crossover plugin with Slack 9.0. Quicktime seems to be working fine, but the dread Windows Media Player seems only to work when I spawn a web browser through root. I can't find anything specifically related to my problem on Codeweaver's site, or anywhere else (after extensive Googling and usenet surfing). The kicker is that I figured out how to fix this EXACT issue on Mandrake 9.0 SIX FREAKING MONTHS AGO!!!

Of course, I forgot the solution. If anyone has any suggestions, please give me a clue... Thanks.

Update: I tried changing permissions on the "fake windows" folder after reading a suggestion on a newsgroup, but no dice. I'm feeling this is a permissions issue since root runs this deal properly, but I'm not sure which direction to go in...

Well, I have remembered my solution to this problem, and I'll post it here in case anyone has a similar issue.

If you want to install the plugin for JUST yourself as a user, you can do it from within your own account. If you want to install it for ALL the users on the system, you need to BE root, not just SU to root. If you SU to root from your own account and install from there, Crossover uses the user directory you're SU'ing from to "plant" itself and branch out into other users' home directories. Apparently this doesn't work for some of the plugins, namely WMP. You need to login to X as root, so that Crossover "plants" itself in the proper directory (root's home). Worked like a charm, and I'm in business.

DISCLAIMER:
Obviously, logging in as root is a BAD thing (at least that's what they tell me). My wife and I are the only users on my little 3-system home network, and I have an external router/firewall, so I'm not terribly nervous about it. But, be warned...

If WMP is your main reason for using Crossover, you might want to check out MPlayer it supports WM audio/video, Quicktime, Real, AVI, MPEG (and MP3), AVI codecs among others.

Heck, if there was MPlayer for Windows, I'd use it at work too! It's that good!
