Waw this is fun. Status: Me the genius played around with some things in inittab and xorg.conf-vesa and a couple of other files while logged in as root and guess what.....
So i have a new computer. I downloaded the nvidia driver for my graphics card. It came with a .run extension. If i remember correctly i think i just type the name of the file on a command line and press enter to execute the file. Question? from which directory should i execute /usr or /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin.
What is the main directory for installing programs on linux?
When this is done im going to reinstall all the things that daedra had posted and ill see how it goes from there.
Yes i am. But usually with files that are compressed, those with tar.gz extension and sometimes the bzip too i think.. never really tried with .run extension. Is it the same process. extract ->put run file in extracted directory->check version->./slackbuild->go to /tmp->installpkg itemname.tgz. Willing to try anything to get this machine to look and feel like mines.
The process is the same. You download the slackbuild and the source package (which is just the installer) and you put the source package into the directory extracted from the slackbuild and then run the slackbuild as usual.
Sorry, but I've never installed the nvidia drivers a slackware box, and I'm not in front of slackware at the moment, so I think someone else will have to chime in here.
Not very helpful shylock. If i knew what i was doing i wont be here
Sorry i didn't mean to be rude, i was just confused when you suddenly talked about openoffice. To be honest I looked at the last few posts and didn't find anyone mention about openoffice and then you suddenly said you installed openoffice which fixed your problem hence I was trying to figure how that happened. Sorry again. Glad you fixed yur problem.
I don't think he meant to say that his problems with the nvidia drivers are resolved, simply that he did manage to install openoffice via slackbuilds to demonstrate that he at least knows what he is doing when it comes to install software via slackbuilds, but still doesn't understand why the nvidia driver slackbuild isn't working.

Well the Nvidia slckbuild driver didn't work for me either. i just used to get a black screen after configuring X. So I use the run file and compiled from nvidia.com. You can try that fread. It's not that difficult , just download it, logout of slackware and goto console mode [no X] and cd to your download directory and run it using: sh nvidia-driver-name.run
