Question compiling questions

I need a couple of compiling questions clarified.

1. Does one have to recompile the existing kernel modules if you're recompling the kernel core only for fine tuning?

2. Is every recompile a "from scratch" proposition or can an existing kernel core be fine tuned? If so, how do you do it?

1. I would recompile the modules as well, that's the most safe way to do it. That way the chance of problems is minimal.
2. If you import the config file of the existing kernel or place it in your kernel source directory with the name .config it will use the settings in that file. The config file is in your /boot directory or on the Slackware cd if you used a kernel from the installation cd in the kernels directory.
