Compile lynx to support image views

Slackware 13.37 includes Lynx 2.8.7rel.1. Apparently it was not compiled to support activating external apps when links to image or video files are entered.

I would like to know the exact options list used to make that compilation, and the specific lynx compile option I should add to it to enable external viewer apps.

The compile time options for Lynx can be found in the SlackBuild in /sources/n/lynx on your favorite mirror.
As you can see Lynx is compiled with the --enable-externs option by default, which enables the use of external applications (see here: http://lynx.isc.org/lynx2.8.6/lynx2-8-6/INSTALLATION ). To configure the use of those applications you have to edit the configuration file lynx.cfg, which can be found in /etc.

One by one, I added the folowing to my own ~/lynx.cfg
Code:
XLOADIMAGE_COMMAND:xv %s
VIEWER:video/mpeg:mplayer %s &:XWINDOWS
VERBOSE_IMAGES:TRUE
MAKE_LINKS_FOR_ALL_IMAGES:TRUE
MAKE_PSEUDO_ALTS_FOR_INLINES:TRUE
None of them had any sought-after effect, but now I think I'll try making them in /etc/lynx.cfg.
Many thanks for the info about lynx compilation, I read http://lynx.isc.org/lynx2.8.6/lynx2-8-6/INSTALLATION and thought --enable-externs would be likely, but when I checked the description of USE_EXTERNALS in lynx.cfg, short as it is, it made me doubt, so decided the safer course was to ask.

Many thanks, /etc/lynx.cfg was the solution, and all I needed to add were the first two lines
Code:
XLOADIMAGE_COMMAND:xv %s
VIEWER:video/mpeg:mplayer %s &:XWINDOWS
