At first the resolution is set in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, scroll down until you see the relevant lines,
then add your own entries (syntax is simple, just follow the existing ones)

Ok this is where im at , i understand Depth is the color depth but which of this options is my kde running on currently and why are there 3 resolutions for each color depth? lets say i want to run my screen at 1280x1024 at 32 bit colors do i just add 1280x1024 in all the modes below?

Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

in short, yes, change each :
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

to:
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Also as a note, the 32 bits color are not used, just 24 bits as far I know, and Windows use only
24 bits too (the 8 other bits are for other thing than pixels)

I'm not sure why there are three listed, I think they are just there as choices.

After you restart KDE after making the change (i.e. adding 1280X1024 to the modes) you can change the resolution using control_alt_+/- or on the K-menu go to System->Screen Size and Rotate. This program will change the resolutions for you and should give you a lot of choices (depending on your video card and screen. On my pc I can go to 1600X1200 but on my laptop I can only go to 1240X768. This has to do with the lcd screen on the laptop)
