Ok, I've tried searching, but haven't been able to find anyone with this problem. I installed Slack 9.1 and compiled the 2.6.1 kernel. After installing the commercial OSS drivers, sound will work in like XMMS and CD player, but like the system sounds and everything don't work. On the console where I startx, it shoots out a bunch of alsa errors, so I'm guessing that X or gnome still thinks I'm using alsa drivers. How do I change it so that it uses my OSS drivers? (I'm using the default XFree86 and Gnome that come with Slack 9.1, I haven't upgraded them at all)
Frist why OSS? OSS is dead ALSA has replaced it with emulation.
Second the reason why thoughs programs work is because they have sound extensions or plugins for the support of OSS.
I have been using OSS since before ALSA had support for my sound card (SB Live! Value), and I had paid for it, so figured I might as well keep using it. But, I'm open to anything, so I downloaded and installed ALSA. The modules load fine, but I get the same thing...I can play a CD fine, but no system sounds or anything. How do I get those to work? (and yes I ran alsamixer and unmuted it)
Ok, I got this fixed, thanks to someone else that had the same problem...apparantly I didn't have permission to /dev/snd/pcmP0d0p whatever the fook that is. Now if I can just figure out the the problem I'm having with my video card in this thread:
