Changing environment variable for gnome session from gnome-terminal

Hello!

I use many environment variables which are set on login from .bash_profile. However, many times I need to change value of these variable (e.g. classpath) many times and need to make it visible across all applications of gnome as if it was set at the time of logging in.

I cannot log out and modify .bash_profile every time as other processes are running. How this can be done?

TIA,
pymehta

I believe the environments stacks.
Each process has an environment and inherits the environment from its parent process.
I believe gnome applications inherit from the environment of gnome.
Therefore I believe you have to restart gnome in order for all gnome applications to take your environment into account. Or you would have to start a terminal, change your environment there and launch all your applications from there (their parent process being the terminal), but it wouldn't change the environment of already running applications or of applications not started from the terminal.

gconf is more flexible and powerful than environment variables but not all applications use gconf.
