change dvd read speed when copying dvd

Hello,

I want to ask if somebody knows how to make k3b (v.0.12.16) to run a DVD at lower speed during the making of the image file when a "DVD Copy"-tool is used. Yes, there is the "Set read speed" option, but it does not affect the speed of reading in "DVD Copy"-mode, and same goes for the "hdparm", which I use for CDs with the same problem. The reason I want not to use the maximum read speed is that I must copy some old DVDs, some of which are even cracked on some places. The noise when the dvd-drive is making on higher gear with some of those DVDs indicates that the lower speed is absolute necessary.

Thanx in advance.

I wonder if growisofs can be used in some way to do this. It does allow speed control.

Well, I searched through the source code to check how exactly it is working, and discovered that k3b uses readcd for making the image of the DVD. I tried to set the "speed=#" option in the program settings (in "k3b settings"), but with no use. growisofs has an option for speed control, but as far as I have seen in the man pages, this option is for writing speed, not the reading one. I will install newer versions of all the cd/dvd recording software in a few days and will report back...

If you start to read a cd/dvd with k3b and then stop it, have a look in the debug info because it will usually give the command line for various actions.

With that you run the command manually (or put it in a shell script), changing the read speed as you wish.
