Basic question ..... I mount CD3 and see the extra Slack packages. I tried to install them with installpkg and pkgtool ..... but must be doing something wrong. The CD has a large file called ..Extra ... I would like to install the complete set of packages...... can somebody help me install those packages ??? TIA, Emmett
How big are we talking on this file called Extra? Are you sure its just not a directory where the packages are located at? And is there any extension or is it just called Extra? AFAIK, the first two cd's are all that you need, the 3rd and 4th are source cd's and documentation, no packages on them. Try checking your second cd for the extra packages perhaps.
extra is a file ... something like this ... /mount./cdrom/extra and extra is a file that has approximately 30 or so packages. I wanted really to get the wlan packages but as I was looking thru the extra folder ... I saw some additional packages that I would like to have as well. In pkgtool , I tried to install them with the directory structure and failed and I tried with installpkg with singular packages with the .tgz extensions and that failed too ...... and it is CD3 with Slack 10. I was hoping to get these additional packages loaded since I am also having problems with my wireless network ... everything looks like it should be working .. but alas no connectivity. The wlan tool was my primary reason for the additional tools ..... Arhg .....
Are these the packages your looking for: ftp://ftp.kpn.be/pub/slackware/slackware-10.0/extra/ that are on the 3rd cd? If so, extra is a directory. I would highly doubt these packages are bundled as one big package to install from.
absolutely the packages !!!! On the CD there are 3 files ... directories .... one is called extra which has those packages you listed . the second one is the slackware book and the third one is the source code. All I would like to do is to install them. I am hoping to further research my wireless problem with Slacware .... I am using Fedora to get online at the moment ..... any ideas as to how to get those packages onto my Slack system ???? Emmett

Well, if you have the cd mounted, go into the directory extra, then you'll have to cd into each package's directory, then run installpkg <package-name> ... either that or you'll have to use pkgtool and specify each directory where the *.tgz's are located. It won't detect them unless your specifing a directory they reside in.

I will try that ... but so I understand .... I can mount the CD / then how do I know which directory to cd into ?? All I have is Konqueror showing me the contents of the extra directory with the list of packages ..... e.g. which directory would the wlan stuff go ?? or any of them ?? So confused, Emmett

Open up a terminal, it will make your life easier using the commands instead of relying on Konqueror.
Most likely its mounting the cd in the /mnt directory. To be for sure, just do a:
cat /etc/fstab | grep cdrom
And it will print off the line where it should be automounting the cdrom, etc. cd into that directory, then into each package you want to install and go from there.
